Accessibility statement

Last updated 23 October 2026

We want everyone to be able to read and explore the archive. The site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.

What we’ve done

  • Semantic headings and landmarks, a skip link, and visible focus on every control.
  • Everything works with a keyboard, including search (⌘K, Ctrl+K or /), filters and the reading tools.
  • Text and controls meet AA contrast in both light and dark themes; colour is never the only signal.
  • Touch targets are at least 44 pixels, and layouts reflow down to 320 pixels wide (the equivalent of 400% zoom) without sideways scrolling.
  • Animation is minimal and switched off if your system asks for reduced motion.
  • You can change text size and line length on any piece.
  • Pages work without JavaScript for reading, searching and subscribing.

How we test

Every change runs automated checks (axe, against WCAG 2.2 AA) on the home page, pieces, Explore and book pages in both themes and on a phone-sized screen, alongside keyboard checks of the main journeys.

Known limitations

  • The visual topic map in Explore is a picture of how topics connect. The same information is available as a list directly beneath it, which is what keyboard and screen reader users reach.
  • Images added by editors depend on the alt text they write; it is required, but its quality can vary.
